Based on the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, Cruel Beauty is a dazzling love story about our deepest desires and their power to change our destiny.
Since birth, Nyx has been betrothed to the evil ruler of her kingdom-all because of a foolish bargain struck by her father. And since birth, she has been in training to kill him.
With no choice but to fulfill her duty, Nyx resents her family for never trying to save her and hates herself for wanting to escape her fate. Still, on her seventeenth birthday, Nyx abandons everything she’s ever known to marry the all-powerful, immortal Ignifex. Her plan? Seduce him, destroy his enchanted castle, and break the nine-hundred-year-old curse he put on her people.
But Ignifex is not at all what Nyx expected. The strangely charming lord beguiles her, and his castle—a shifting maze of magical rooms—enthralls her.
As Nyx searches for a way to free her homeland by uncovering Ignifex’s secrets, she finds herself unwillingly drawn to him. Even if she could bring herself to love her sworn enemy, how can she refuse her duty to kill him? With time running out, Nyx must decide what is more important: the future of her kingdom, or the man she was never supposed to love.
This review is LONG overdue, but it’s here…finally.
I had a really hard time getting into this book at first. It was slow and didn’t really entice me and to be honest, it didn’t get any better either.
I was just really disappointed by how much this book did not live up to what I had expected it to be based on all the things I had heard and read. It wasn’t a complete flop because I did finish it but I am not sure I want to read the next book ”Crimson Bound” , although I have heard that it is supposedly better.
The plot was promising, but felt flat when I finally started reading it.The development of everything either took a long time or everything happened at once. I liked the palette of characters- they were fun.
Nyx was a headstrong main character who was very vulnerable but tried to play the weak side of her down by being cruel and angry towards everyone. She fell in love really fast though and that was something that just seemed really strange. A character afraid of opening up just falls in love in like two seconds…but that is the typical every day YA trope. She also frustrated me because she had finally made up her mind about Ignifex and her father’s plan…and then she ruined everything LIKE CAN YOU NOT NYX?!
Ignifex was nice, I liked him. He was witty and sarcastic and seemed evil, but not too evil. He made a lot of fun of Nyx and the things she did, made her feel uncomfortable and yet had room in his heart and busy life to care for her.
The writing seemed at times a little off and I really felt like there could’ve been so many adventures and plot twists in the novel that in the end it just lacked everything. I had really hyped myself up for this book and don’t really know what my final thoughts should be.
It definitely isn’t the best retelling I have read, but I am sure that it couldn’t be the worst either.
